3 ways to dispose your old furniture

Every few years or so, the furniture in our living room, balcony, garden or even our bedroom may require a fresh new look. The best way to achieve this is to replace them with a brand-new set of furniture and get rid of the old ones. The good old saying: In with the new and out of the old.

However, it may be a hassle-headache to go around furniture shops to choose for furniture, to compare prices and to get followed around by the salesperson when all you want to do it to shop around without pressured to buy. What’s even more hassle-headache is before your new furniture gets delivered, you will have to get rid of the old, bulky furniture that are in your house to make space for your brand-new furniture.

Yes, we understand. Furniture like sofa, dining tables, beds, mattress and so on are very bulky and heavy and it is nearly impossible to dispose them by your own.

So, here are some ways that you can dispose the furniture without exerting much energy on your own!

1. Contact your Town Council

If you are staying in HDB flats, your Town Council provides free disposal services for you. The free service allows you to dispose up to 3 bulky items per month. Town council will arrange their friendly staff to remove the furniture from your place and dispose them in the most environment friendly manner possible.

2. Contact a waste collector.

If you are staying in a private property, i.e condominium or a landed property, you can check with your property manager for disposal services or you can check online for a list of waste collector contacts who can help you get rid of the furniture for a fee. Usually, disposal fee for each item is around $50 to $100, depending on the size of the item.

3. Inform the Furniture shop where you bought your new furniture

When you buy furniture from the store, be it online or offline, inform them that you currently have bulky items that you need to get rid of. Usually (not definitely), they can arrange someone to disposal the items off before delivery of the new furniture. Some companies do it for free, some companies don’t. The best is to snap a photo of your old furniture and show the store. They will advise you better when they can estimate the size of the item that you need to dispose.
